Seniors lead Tigers past Trinity

Box Score Seniors Jordy Stephenson and Becky Luetjen each posted a double-double to lead Colorado College to an 82-78 victory over Trinity University on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.
 
The win was the first for the Tigers in Sams Gymnasium since they joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2007-08.
 
Stephenson led Colorado College with a career-high 12 rebounds and scored 22 points to earn her first double-double of her career. Luetjen also scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Both seniors also ran the offense dishing out a team-high six assists each to tie career highs.
 
Trinity held an early 13-7 lead after Murphy Burns hit a layup with 15:14 remaining in the first half.
 
The very next possession Stephenson hit a fastbreak layup to help ignite a 10-2 run for the Tigers. Junior Sarah Gunkel completed the run with another fastbreak layup with 12:09 left in the half to help CC take its first lead of the game at 17-15.
 
After a timeout by Trinity, Alison Salmon hit a three-pointer with 11:48 remaining in the half to regain the lead and begin a 9-2 run for Trinity.
 
Down 24-19, Stephenson helped ignite another run for the Tigers when she hit a three-pointer with 9:28 left in the half. Stephenson completed the 10-0 run with another shot from long range to give CC a 29-24 lead with 7:56 remaining on the clock.
 
The Tigers held its largest lead of the half at 35-28 when Luetjen hit a layup on the fly with 2:53 left in the half.
 
Trinity, however, closed out the half on a 10-0 run to retake the lead. Trinity tied the game at 35-35 when Salmon made a three-pointer with 41 seconds left in the half. Salmon hit her final three of the half with one tick left on the clock to send Trinity into halftime with a 38-35 edge over CC.
 
Trinity held its largest lead of the game at 54-43 with 12:23 remaining in the game, but the Tigers answered back with a 19-4 run to retake the lead with 6:41 left in the game. Luetjen began the run with two made free throws at the 11:35 mark, while Stephenson finished the run with a layup to give CC a 62-58 lead.
 
Colorado College continued to build up its lead through the remainder of the game and held an 80-70 edge over Trinity after Luetjen hit two shots from the charity stripe with 1:34 remaining in the game.
 
Trinity attempted a comeback as it went on an 8-0 run to pull within two points with 28 seconds left in the game. Trinity looked to tie the game with nine ticks left on the clock when Anne Waidelich went in for a layup, but Luetjen blocked the shot and Stephenson grabbed the rebound to give the Tigers possession.
 
Stephenson was fouled with seven seconds left in the game and was sent to the line where she hit both her free throws to give CC its 82-78 victory over Trinity.
 
With the win, Colorado College improved to 13-11 on the season and 8-6 in conference play to earn at least the second-place seed in the West Division. Trinity fell to 9-14 on the season and 7-7 in conference action.
 
Gunkel narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Courtney Tyus also scored in double figures for CC with 12 points. Sophomore Gracie Rennecker led the team tying her career-high three blocks.
 
Trinity was led by Burns with 21 points. Hannah Coley added 17 points, while Salmon and Taylor Hollins each scored 10 points apiece to round out the double-figure scoring for Trinity.
 
The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host play to Hendrix College for Senior Day at Reid Gymnasium.
