Luetjen climbs scoring list as CC tops Austin

Box Score Senior forward Becky Luetjen scored 14 of her 18 points in the second as Colorado College pulled away for a 71-60 victory over Austin College on Driday night at Reid Gymnasium.

With her 14th point on a free throw with 8:50 remaining in the game, Luetjen moved into fifth place on the program's career scoring list, surpassing Debbie Nalty's  total of 1,434 set from 1980-84. Luetjen finished the game with 1,439 career points.

Junior forward Sarah Gunkel recorded her second career double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, but it was her six free throws during the final 3:26 that fueled an 11-2 run that provided the winning margin.

The Kangaroos trailed 39-30 in the opening minute of the second half, but outscored CC 16-2 during the ensuing six minutes to grab a 46-41 lead with 13:16 remaining.

Luetjen scored five points during a 7-0 run to put the Tigers back in front, and neither team led by more than point until senior guard Jenny Knapp drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 7:43 to go.

Austin was within two points at 60-58 after Kersti Marusich scored the last of her game-high 21 points on a short jumper, but CC made nine of 10 free throws during the final 2:25 and the 'Roos managed just one more basket by Lexi Beeson.

Early in the first half, the Kangaroos made four of their first five shots from behind the arc and jumped out to a 12-6 lead, then went up 15-8 after Marusich completed an old-fashioned three-point play 6:01 into the game.

Meanwhile, the Tigers made just four of their first 15 field-goal attempts and then lost Luetjen for the remainder of the first frame after she picked up her second foul just 8:11 into the contest.

Austin led by 13 after Christina Kime sank a pair of free throws midway through the first half, but Sarah Gunkel scored eight points during a 28-7 tear that gave the Tigers a 38-30 lead after 20 minutes.

CC tied the game at 28-28 on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Courtney Tyus with 3:57 to play, and took the lead on a layup by junior forward Marissa Gradoz 35 seconds later.

The Tigers improved to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, moving a half game ahead of both Southwestern University and Trinity University in the West Division standings. The 'Roos slipped to 1-20 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

Colorado College plays host to the University of Dallas on Sunday at noon.
