CC tripped up at Trinity

Box Score Missed opportunities and a pair of penalty kicks were too much to overcome as Colorado College dropped a 4-0 decision at Trinity University on a blustery Sunday afternoon in southern Texas.

Even though the visiting Tigers were kept off the scoreboard for just the second time this season, they stayed in the game thanks to the efforts of sophomore goalkeeper Tom Crosby, who made a career high seven saves.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much he could do about TU's first two goals.

Johnny Lawson's penalty kick in the 34th minute proved to be the only goal the hosts would need. Trinity doubled its lead in the 67th minute when Darren McAfee converted on a second PK.

"The first penalty was for a tug on the shirt," head coach Horst Richardson said. "The second was for an unintentional handball, which the referee admitted after the game should not have been called. By then it was too late.

"The second penalty kick broke our back."

CC launched nine shots, only three of which made it through to goalkeeper Matt Cardone. The best scoring opportunities were on direct kicks from just outside the penalty area, but both sailed high and wide of the Trinity goal.

"We were unable to capitalize on the few chances that we had," Richardson said. "They are a wonderful side and we like playing against them. Hopefully, we'll get another shot at them in the SCAC Tournament."

TU, which added tallies by Yuri Ribeiro and Brian Hine in the final 15 minutes, improved to 10-2-1 overall and 9-1-0 in the SCAC.

Colorado College slipped to 7-5-2 overall and 6-3-0 in league play.

"We're pleased to get a split on the road this weekend," Richardson said. "We need to re-group and get ready for two teams that will want to get even with us."

The Tigers return home to play host to Schreiner University on Friday, Oct. 18, and Texas Lutheran University on Sunday, Oct. 20.
