Crusaders can’t stop Salazar, Tigers

Box Score Talk about saving your best for last.

Senior forward Andrew Salazar scored a pair of goals and added three assists to fuel Colorado College's 5-2 victory over the University of Dallas in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Crusader Field.

The Tigers, who improved to 13-5-2 overall and 11-3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, will carry a six-match winning streak into next week's conference tournament at Southwestern University.

Brandon Ogilvie put CC on the board in the 14th minute when he converted a feed from Salazar into his SCAC-leading 14th tally of the season. The senior forward extended his goal-scoring streak to a season-best three games.

A little more than seven minutes later, sophomore midfielder Max Grossenbacher struck for his fourth goal of the season to give Colorado College a two-goal lead.

P.J. Hasson made all six of his saves during the first half to keep UD within striking distance, and the Crusaders knotted the score in the 57th minute on goals by Barton Holdridge and Juan Hernandez-Reyes.

The Tigers regained the lead 12 minutes later when junior defender Alec Sowers struck for his first goal of the season, which proved to be his first career game winner.

Salazar added an insurance tally in the 81st minute and completed the first multiple-goal game of his career with 1:18 remaining in the contest.

Sophomore midfielder Seth Newby extended his point streak to a career-best four games with an assist on Salazar's second tally.

Sophomore Ian Horne stopped four shots, including three in the second half.

CC finished with a 23-9 advantage in total shots, while the Crusaders recorded a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Salazar's seven points are the most for a Tiger since Matt Fechter recorded eight on four goals in a 5-1 victory at Southwestern University on Oct. 23, 2011. His three assists are the most since Fechter recorded three in a 4-0 victory over Fredonia State on Sept. 14, 2012.

Colorado College's five goals are a season high, and during their current six-game winning streak, the Tigers have averaged 3.33 goals per game and outscored their opponents 20-4.
