Box Score In a battle of nationally-ranked heavyweights, No. 14 Colorado College went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Trinity University on a blustery Sunday afternoon, but the visitors scored 1:45 into the contest and escaped Stewart Field with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Theo Hooker made a two-hand stop on a blast by Victor Araujo, but the rebound went to Brent Mandelkorn who was waiting behind the CC defense and he put a crossing shot from outside the left post into the net.
Trinity improved to 13-1-0 overall and 9-0-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Colorado College slipped to 11-3-0 and 7-2-0 in league play.
Both teams had to contend with the elements, which included falling temperatures, occasional rain and a stiff breeze out of the north that reached 25 miles per hour at times.
With the wind at their backs during the first half, the Texas Tigers had several chances to extend their lead, but were unable to get another shot past Hooker.
The most dangerous opportunity occurred during the 20th minute when Hooker came off his line to knock the ball away from Roberto Camargo, who was making a run in the box on the right side.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Cardone stopped 10 shots for TU, one of which was on a header by
Andrew Worthington from the center of the box with just over 35 minutes to play. Cardone was able to track the ball and deny a shot by
Brandon Ogilvie near the right post.
He also got help from his defenders who blocked several shots, including one by Dylan Blumberg on a shot by CC's
Max Grossenbacher from eight yards out in front of the right post midway through the first half. Â
Playing into the wind during the second half, Trinity slowed the game down to limit Colorado College's chances to level the score.
TU finished with a 20-12 advantage in total shots, but the hosts held an 11-7 edge in those on target.
CC makes the last of its three regular-season trips to Texas next week when the Tigers visit Austin College and the University of Dallas on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively. Â
