Tigers Drop 7-2 Decision to No. 3 UND

Box Score

For the second consecutive night, third-ranked North Dakota's special teams proved to be the difference as UND claimed a 7-2 victory over Colorado College Saturday at The Broadmoor World Arena. North Dakota, which scored five power-play and two shorthanded goals, improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NCHC. CC, meanwhile, fell to 2-2 and 0-2 in league play.

Mark MacMillan had a hat trick and added two assists and Michael Parks had three assists for UND. That duo opened the scoring 5:50 into the game when MacMillan completed a 2-on-1 rush with Parks and placed a backhand past CC goalie Tyler Marble. MacMillan then posted his fourth point of the series with a centering pass to the slot that Paul LaDue fired past Marble at the 9:23 mark. LaDue finished the game with two goals and two helpers.

After CC's Hunter Fejes was called for a five-minute checking from behind penalty with 5:19 remaining in the period, UND struck two more times during the extended power-play. Tucker Poolman scored at 15:05 and Jordan Schmaltz tallied his first of the year at 16:31, ending Marble's night after making eight saves. North Dakota kept up the pressure for the rest of the period but CC backup Chase Perry saved all four shots he saw before intermission.

Just like Friday night, the Tigers scored the only goal of the second period when Cody Bradley took a long pass from Ian Young and beat UND goalie Zane McIntyre on a breakaway. It turned out to be the only even-strength goal of the contest.

LaDue and MacMillan put the game out of reach early in the third period with power-play goals at 3:26 and 6:19, respectively, with both coming during a five-minute advantage after CC's Christian Heil was whistled for a contact to the head major penalty. The Tigers picked up their lone power-play goal of the night at the 10:32 mark when freshman Teemu Kivihalme went top shelf past McIntyre from the left circle for his second goal of the year. Sophomore Sam Rothstein and senior Scott Wamsganz each picked up his second assist of the season on the play.

MacMillan completed his hat trick with a shorthanded, empty-net goal at the 13:45 mark after CC head coach Mike Haviland pulled Perry during a five-minute power-play following a charging call against UND's Trevor Olson.

UND was 5-of-11 on the power-play and outshot CC 35-23. McIntyre made 21 saves, while Perry finished with a career-high 20 for the Tigers. LaDue led all players with six shots, followed by Poolman with four. Senior captain Peter Stoykewych and sophomore Jaccob Slavin each had a team-high three shots for Colorado College.

The Tigers head out on the road for the first time this season next weekend as they take on No. 7 Boston College on Friday, Oct. 25 and New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 26.
