CC Blanks Texas Lutheran In Home Finale

Box Score It was a perfect sendoff for Andrew Worthington and the six Colorado College seniors.

Playing for the final time at Stewart Field, Worthington and the Tiger defense rose to the occasion to record its 10th shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Sunday afternoon.

"Worthy is the general of the defense," head coach Horst Richardson said. "He is a magician at positioning himself correctly, and he distributes the ball effectively and precisely. He does it all and the guys really respect him."

The Bulldogs became the latest victim of CC's stingy defense, which allowed only five goals at home this season.

The question became when would the Tigers capitalize on their dominance in time of possession.

"It was a lackluster first half when we were depending too much on our defense," Richardson said. "We addressed that at halftime and the second half was much different with more spirit, punch and desire."

Junior midfielder Max Grossenbacher finally struck for the only goal of the game in the 71st minute, collecting a through ball from freshman midfielder Brian Rubin on the left side of the box and slotting a shot past TLU goalkeeper Jonathan Michael inside the near post.

"It was a wonderful goal off of a perfect pass," Richardson said. "It was expertly timed and the goaltender never had a chance. Brian Rubin has come out of nowhere to become an offensive force."

With his seventh tally of the season, Grossenbacher tied senior forward Brandon Ogilvie for the team lead with four game winners.

Colorado College finished with a 20-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Theo Hooker stopped the only two shots he faced while posting his ninth clean sheet of the season. He improved to 10-2-2 in goal and lowered his goals-against average to 0.42.

The Tigers improved to 13-3-2 overall and 9-2-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

"It was hard-earned win against a resurgent opponent who trying to lock down third place in the conference," Richardson said. "We're in a good position as the second seed. We need to keep the momentum going."

Michael stopped seven shots for Texas Lutheran which slipped to 7-8-2 overall and 5-7-1 in league play.

CC wraps up the regular season next Saturday night at Centenary College in Shreveport, La.
