Box Score Rachel Herron struck for her first game winner and
Heather Seeley recorded her first shutout to lead Colorado College to a 2-0 triumph at the University of New Mexico on Sunday afternoon.
The victory also was No. 119 for head coach
Geoff Bennett at CC, who tied Dang Pibulvech for first place on the program's career list.
Most importantly, the Tigers improved to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the Mountain West after beginning the season by playing the other four teams ranked among the top five in the conference's pre-season poll.
Herron struck for the only goal Colorado College needed in the 25th minute, taking a pass from senior
Jaclyn Silsby and sliding a shot into an open net from 12 yards out.
The sequence began with Kaeli Vanderluis sending a long volley into the crease. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Demers was unable to control the ball, and Silsby gained control and played it across to Herron.
Vandersluis added an insurance tally with three minutes to play. Sophomore forward
Chanisse Hendrix dribble down the right side, stopped to move around a defender, and slipped a pass to the senior midfielder who was waiting in the center of the box.
With the goal, Vandersluis became the 11th Tiger to record 60 or more career points, finishing the game with 61. She also climbed into 11th place in program history with 22 career goals.
Seeley made a career-best eight saves in her third start, the biggest of which was on Alyssa Coonrod's penalty kick in the 65th minute.
She also made diving stops on shots by Brooke Webster with 19:07 remaining in the first half and on a blast by Maddie Olguin that was headed toward the far post early in the second half.
With a little more than 31 minutes remaining, Seeley came off her line to clear the ball away after it bounced around in the box after a corner kick.
At the other end of the pitch, Demers made a series of sensational saves to keep the Lobos within striking distance.
In the 39th minute, she made a diving stop on Silsby's crossing shot at the far post. Then, with time running out in the first half, she made a fingertip save on a direct kick by
Sarah Schweiss at the left post.
UNM, which slipped to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference, finished with a 15-13 advantage in total shots. Each team took seven corner kicks.
Colorado College continues its string of four consecutive road games next week when the Tigers travel to the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
