No. 11 Denver Drops CC, 8-1

Box Score

Danton Heinen scored two goals, Daniel Doremus had a goal and three assists and Trevor Moore and Joey LaLeggia each had a goal and two assists to lead No. 11 Denver past Colorado College, 8-1, Friday night at Magness Arena in Denver. The Pioneers, who scored four goals in the first period, improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, while CC fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the league play.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first two minutes of the contest. Heinen scored the first of his pair in the period just 1:23 into the game by chipping a crossing pass from Trevor Moore over CC goalie Tyler Marble. Nolan Zajac scored 23 seconds later with a blast from just inside the blue line after Grant Arnold gathered a rebound and found Zajac at the right point.

Daniel Doremus made it 3-0 at the 7:23 mark of the opening frame with a power play goal from the goal line that snuck in between the left post and Marble, ending his night. CC head coach Mike Haviland pulled Marble and inserted freshman Chase Perry, who made some big saves for the Tigers the rest of the period.

Senior Scott Wamsganz cut the lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal at the 8:27 mark. Wamsganz stole the puck from Quentin Shore in front of the DU net and buried a shot past Pioneer netminder Evan Cowley. Cowley came up big about three minutes later by saving a pair of point-blank shots by CC's Luc Gerdes and Alex Roos to hold the two-goal advantage. Heinen then notched his second of the period with just 36 seconds remaining, beating Perry after taking a pass from behind the net by Moore.

Moore, Doremus and LaLeggia each posted two assists for Denver in the opening 20 minutes.

The Pioneers tacked on three more goals in the second period, started by Matt Marcinew at the 5:57 mark. Marcinew gathered the puck in between the circles following a CC turnover and beat Perry glove side to make it 5-1. Gabe Levin scored at the 11:59 mark and LaLeggia made it 7-1 at 13:03 of the period. Shortly after LaLeggia's goal, Wamsganz was called for a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct during a skirmish along the boards after Doremus knocked CC's Hunter Fejes to the ice. The Tigers' Cody Bradley hit the post with a shorthanded breakaway attempt and the Tigers killed the penalty to keep the score at 7-1 after two periods.

The Tigers had their own five-minute power play at the 5:14 mark of the third period when Didier was whistled for an elbowing penalty. Bradley appeared to score at the 6:22 mark when he caught the puck out of the air, dropped it, then hit it out of the air with his stick past Cowley, but the goal was waved off.

Moore closed out the scoring at 16:04 of the third with a rebound goal off his own breakaway.

Denver outshot the Tigers, 35-26, and there were eight misconduct penalties called in the game. DU was 1-for-3 on the power play while CC did not score in four opportunities.

Cowley made 25 saves and is 5-3 this season. Marble made just two saves in his seven-plus minutes and Perry had 25 saves in relief work.

The Tigers host Wisconsin next Friday night, Nov. 21 at 7:37 pm, then travel to the Air Force Academy for a 7:05 pm game on Saturday, Nov. 22.
