Colorado College opened league play with a bang in Kerrville, Texas, on Friday.
The Tigers squared their overall record at 7-7, posting a convincing 8-1 victory over Schreiner Univeristy in the first of three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matches in three days in the Lone Star State.
CC got off to a great start by sweeping all three doubles competitions. Its only setback of the day came at No. 6 singles, where sophomore
Dylan Ball came up short in a 6-3, 2-6 (10-2) battle with Schreiner's Thomas Lozano, who has lost only once all season while playing in that spot.
"This was the most complete match we've played and it came at a very critical point in the year," said head coach
Anthony Weber. "I was very proud of the guys' efforts in all nine matches. We played very smart in doubles, and our freshmen –
Jason Gutierrez and
Levi Kimmel, clinched the victory for us."
Gutierrez and Kimmel, playing at No. 1 and 2, respectively, made quick work of their opponents in straight sets to give Colorado College a 5-0 advantage.
At No. 2 doubles, Gutierrez and sophomore
Casey Shaw staved off a pair of match points before prevailing in a tiebreaker over SU juniors Austin Carrola and Nate West. Team captain
Jack Burger, Shaw and
Ross Sherman also claimed singles triumphs.
