Colorado College arrived on the Trinity University campus poised for the challenge on Friday morning, and quickly accomplished its mission.
No. 3 seed CC wasted no time nailing down a spot in Saturday's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals, posting a workmanlike 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Southwestern University in first-round action of the 2014 SCAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
The Tigers will take on Texas Lutheran University, which advanced with a 5-0 triumph of its own against Centenary College, at 8 a.m. CT Saturday for the right to play in the Sunday's championship match.
After sweeping all three doubles matches against the Pirates, Colorado College needed to prevail in just two singles events to move on. Sophomore
Ross Sherman, playing at the No. 6 spot, cruised through two sets without dropping a game before junior captain
Jack Burger provided the clincher with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 3.
"We just continue to gain strength in doubles," said head coach
Anthony Weber. " We were down 1-2 against the same team coming out of doubles last Sunday, and flipped that to a 3-0 start today. Then there was no let-up in singles. Ross continued his dominance, Jack clinched the match quickly thereafter and we were in strong positions throughout the lineup."
Burger, now 11-5 overall in singles this spring, also teamed up with freshman
Levi Kimmel to deliver an 8-2 verdict at No. 1 doubles while Sherman and sophomore
Taylor Delehanty won by the same score at No. 3. The closest match of the day came at No. 2 doubles, where freshman
Jason Gutierrez and sophomore
Casey Shaw persevered by an 8-6 count over Southwestern's Edward Yu and Alvaro Rojas.
Sherman, a first-year player for the Tigers, improved his season singles record to a glittering 13-4.
