Box Score

John Gilmour scored the game-winning goal with 6:50 left in the third period and Tom Parisi added two goals to lead the 16th-ranked Providence hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Colorado College to complete a two-game non-conference sweep Sunday night at Schneider Arena.

Gilmour broke a 3-3 tie with a blast just inside the blue line that went over CC goalie Chase Perry's left shoulder and in off the crossbar. Brandon Tanev scored an empty-netter with 17.5 seconds left to secure the victory for Providence, which improved to 13-6-1 this season.

Earlier in the final period, Parisi had given Providence a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the game just 23 seconds into the stanza with a shot from above the left circle that went right though Perry's legs. But CC (3-13-1) took advantage of its only power play of the game as Sam Rothstein made it 3-3 just four seconds after PC's Ross Maurmann was called for boarding eight minutes into the third period. After winning the faceoff, Rothstein skated towards the net and redirected a blast from Jaccob Slavin past Providence netminder Nick Ellis.

"Early on in the year we may have collapsed," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "But we got a huge goal on the power play. We just have to limit our mistakes."

Cody Bradley opened the scoring at the 10:20 mark of the first period with his team-high eighth goal of the season. Bradley gathered the puck behind the net, slithered through the Providence defense to the front of the net and slipped a shot through Ellis' legs. Hunter Fejes and Alex Roos assisted on the play.

Providence fought back with two unanswered goals later in the first period. Parisi evened things up with 7:38 remaining with a similar play to Bradley's. He got puck in the right corner, moved to the slot and beat Perry stick-side with a shot that clanged off the crossbar. Trevor Mingoia notched a power-play goal with 3:21 left in the first with a shot from right in front of the net after taking a centering pass from Nick Saracino.

The Friars came out like gangbusters in the second period, hitting a post and crossbar in the first two minutes and outshooting CC, 6-1, in the first seven minutes. The Tigers withstood the barrage and capitalized as team captain Peter Stoykewych tied the game at the 9:44 mark. Bradley took the puck down the left side and into the corner before finding Stoykewych alone in the slot.

"I believe we are playing the right way but we are finding out how hard it is to win," said Haviland. "The guys have confidence right now. It's not the results we want, but we can see the confidence. For us to get in that winning column, we have to keep working."

Perry finished with 28 saves while Ellis, who got the start after Jon Gillies fell ill, had 19. The Friars, who were 1-for-2 on the power play, outshot the Tigers 33-22. Parisi and Kevin Rooney each had a game-high six shots while Rothstein and Fejes led CC with four apiece.

The Tigers continue on the road with a game against the University of Connecticut on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The puck drops in Bridgeport, Conn., at 5:35 p.m. (MT).
