Box Score Christian Wulff struck for his first career hat trick to propel Colorado College to a 6-0 victory over Schreiner University in the second semifinal of the 2015 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship.
Â
CC advanced to Sunday's championship match and a showdown with top-seeded Trinity University, which defeated Texas Lutheran University, 5-0, in the first semifinal.Â
Â
Robert Malone put the Tigers on the board when he touched in a cross from junior midfielder Nathan Anderson in the sixth minute. The freshman midfielder took over the team lead with his third game winner of the season.
Â
Anderson doubled CC's lead 3:25 later when he took a cross from senior midfielder
Max Grossenbacher and sent a sharp-angle shot back to the net on the left side.
Â
Wulff gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the 18th minute when he chased down a cross-field pass from Malone and sent a shot from the left edge of the box inside the far post.
Â
"Starting well and asserting ourselves was the key today," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "Being at home and being rested certainly worked in our favor.
Â
"I was glad to see our guys take advantage of that. To get every healthy play a chance to experience this, the atmosphere with a wonderful crowd, will benefit the program in the long run."
Â
Wulff struck a second time in the 37th minute when he settled a feed from freshman defender
Keenan Amer, turned in the center of the box and slipped a shot into the right side. It marked the first multiple-goal game for Colorado College's junior defender.
Â
Anderson notched his second of the game 6:09 in the second half when he chased down a long volley from senior defender
Trevor Houghton and finished from six yards out in front of the right post.
Â
Wulff's final tally provided the highlight of the day. He found the net with a diving header off an end-line cross from Grossenbacher.
Â
"That's one you always see on TV and dream about," Wulff said. "Me and Max made eye contact and I didn't have to do anything. He put it on my head and I just knocked it in.
Â
"We might enjoy this for a few hours, but tomorrow is what we're looking forward to. It definitely was important because Trinity did the same thing. Tomorrow's game is why we play."
Â
With his two assists, Grossenbacher climbed into a tie for 24th place in program history with 58 points and a tie for 27th with 16 assists.
Â
The Tigers compiled a 27-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-0 margin in corner kicks.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Theo Hooker made a pair of saves for the Tigers during his 76:26 in net. Freshman
Dylan Ward stopped one shot during the final 13:34.
Â
Colorado College posted its sixth consecutive clean sheet and ninth of the season. Three of those shutouts came at the expense of the Mountaineers.
Â
"We were really happy with our mentality and approach to the game," Palguta said. "Hopefully the guys bring that again tomorrow."
Â
Junior Blake Lawson stopped a pair of shots for Schreiner during the first half. Brandon Anselmi had four saves during the final 45 minutes.
Â
CC improved to 14-2-3 while Schreiner finished its season with an 8-11-1 record.
Â
Colorado College and Trinity split two games during the regular season. CC posted a 3-1 victory on Sept. 20 at Stewart Field, but TU avenged that loss with a 1-0 victory in double overtime on Oct. 10.
