Box Score Pomona-Pitzer Colleges built a six-goal lead seven minutes into the second half and then withstood a furious Colorado College rally to escape Stewart Field with a 15-11 victory on Sunday afternoon.

After freshman midfielder Sallie Marx gave the Sagehens an 11-5 lead 7:04 into the second half, the Tigers scored five of the next six goals to pull to within 12-10 on senior attacker Iris Rayburn's second goal with 7:29 still on the clock.

CC had a chance to cut its deficit to one, but freshman attacker Steph Kelly was knocked to the ground and lost control of the ball. Pomona-Pitzer turned the no-call into a 13-10 lead after sophomore attacker Rebecca Long scored an unassisted goal nearly a minute later.    

Freshman attacker Annie DeFrino pulled the Tigers to within two points with her second tally, however that proved to be the last time CC would score.

The Sagehens picked up an insurance goal from junior attacker Sarah Markowitz with 3:45 to play and then a man-up marker by Hannah Christenson with 27 seconds remaining. The sophomore attacker led Pomona-Pitzer with six goals.

Colorado College sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig recorded three goals and a pair of assists to tie her season high of five points.

DeFrino and Kelly each finished with two goals and an assist for the Tigers, who slipped to 4-6.

Junior goaltender Martha Smith stopped 11 shots for CC, her third game of the season and fourth of her career with double-digit saves.

Kelly grabbed a season-high 11 draw controls for Colorado College, which finished with a 21-7 advantage.

The Sagehens posted a 34-28 advantage in total shots and a 19-14 edge in ground balls.

Freshman goaltender Gaby Fukumura finished with 13 saves for Pomona-Pitzer, which improved to 6-3.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 25, when they play host to Carthage College at 4 p.m.
