Benjamin, DeFrino Fuel Win Over Carthage

Box Score Lily Benjamin and Annie DeFrino combined for nine goals and a pair of assists to fuel Colorado College in a 15-1 victory over Carthage College on Thursday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Benjamin's seven points are the most by a Tiger in a single game this season. The sophomore attacker also matched sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig's team high of five goals set at Claremont Colleges on Feb. 22.

DeFrino struck for the first of her season-high four tallies 1:03 into the contest after taking a feed from freshman attacker Steph Kelly. Senior attacker Virginia Logue added what proved to be the game winner 1:17 later.

Markers by DeFrino and Kelly gave CC a 4-0 lead 4:40 into the contest, and then it was time for Benjamin to take over. The native of Cleveland, Ohio, was involved in seven of the next nine goals as the Tigers extended their lead to 13-0 a little more than six minutes into the second half.

Benjamin scored twice in a span of 1:55 midway through the first half, struck again with 1.7 seconds to play before the break to give Colorado College an 11-0 lead after 30 minutes, and added her final tally with 23:51 remaining in the game.

Two of her goals were set up by junior attacker Sammy Blair, who finished with career highs of three assists and four points.

Junior Martha Smith stopped the only shot she faced during the first 18:29. Freshman Zoe Frolick made one save in her first collegiate appearance.

Both goaltenders were the beneficiary of a suffocating defensive effort by the Tigers, who forced 23 turnovers.

CC also grabbed 13 of 18 draw controls and registered a 30-14 advantage in ground balls.

Senior midfielder Dylan Voneiff grabbed a game-high four ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Sadie Cole led the way with four draw controls.

The Lady Reds got a stellar performance from junior goaltender Taylor Sopron, who finished with 19 saves.

Junior midfielder Elizabeth Wittenborg broke up the shutout with a free-position goal with a little less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Colorado College, which improved to 5-6, plays its final home game of the season at 11 a.m. Sunday against the University of Redlands.
