Seniors Shine As CC Sails Over Pirates

Box Score Three Colorado College's seniors made sure they ended the season on a high note by combining for 10 goals in a 21-8 victory over Southwestern University on Friday morning at Linfield College.

Attacker Virginia Logue struck for a season-high four tallies, midfielder Dylan Voneiff added three tallies and an assist, and attacker Maddy Pitkin finished with three goals in the first of their two games today.

The outcome was never in doubt as CC struck for eight consecutive goals to open the game.

Sophomore attacker Lily Benjamin started the onslaught 2:49 into the contest, then the Tigers added tallies by first-year attacker Steph Kelly, sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig, Voneiff and Logue in a little less than four minutes to build a five-goal lead.

After markers from Voneiff, Pitkin and Kelly made the score 8-0, SU's Courtney Ragland broke up the shutout midway through the first half with the first of her three goals.

Benjamin's second goal gave Colorado College an 11-2 lead with 4:52 remaining in the first half, but Allison Schmitt answered 44 seconds later trim the Tiger lead to eight after 30 minutes.

Logue struck twice in a span of 37 seconds early in the second half, then Sammy Blair's goal gave CC a 14-3 advantage 3:59 into the second half.

Tallies by Mary Jalufka and Regland trimmed Southwestern's deficit to nine with a little more than 20 minutes to play, but Colorado College responded with five straight to take their biggest lead at 19-5 with 7:43 to go.  

Sophomore midfielder Sadie Cole, Benjamin, Kelly and Taussig each recorded a pair of markers.

Kelly recorded a game-high eight draw controls and finished the game with 106 for the season.

Junior goalkeeper Martha Smith made five saves during the first half and improved to 9-7. Freshman Zoe Frolick stopped one shot during the final 30 minutes.

CC finished with a 38-15 advantage in total shots and an 18-9 edge in ground balls.

Jordan Little steered aside seven shots for the Pirates, who dropped to 7-8.

Colorado College (9-7) plays its final game of the regular season against Linfield at 4:30 p.m. PT.
