Late Goals Power CC Past Trinity

Box Score Soren Frykholm and Max Grossenbacher scored 19 seconds apart late in the second half to give Colorado College a 3-1 victory over Trinity University on Sunday at Stewart Field.

Frykholm blasted a crossing shot through the hands of TU goalkeeper Chad Margotta from eight yards out in front of the right post with only 7:44 remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie. Senior defender Jack McCormick slipped the ball to Frykholm from the center of the box on the play that started with a CC corner kick.

"It was a great last-second touch from Jack that completely opened everything up," Frykholm said. "I'm never going to forget this goal and I'm really glad about the timing,

"I finished hard. The other night I missed a sitter and thought about it too much. Today we needed a big goal and the ball had to go in."

Just after Trinity put the ball in play, McCormick sent a long pass down the left flank to Grossenbacher, who worked his way around a defender and found the net with a high crossing shot to the upper right corner.

"I'm so proud of the way the guys dug deep and found two goals," head coach Scott Palguta said. "It was a big win for a number of reasons. It was the top-ranked team in the country, a team we had never beaten before in conference, and we did it the hard way."

Colorado College, which enjoyed a territorial advantage throughout much of the game, appeared to be in control after junior defender Christian Wulff scored on the rebound of a Ryan Huettel direct kick from just off the goal line near the left post.

"It was about time," Wulff said. "I had a dream last night about scoring and ripping off my mask. It was unbelievable. We deserve the win. We worked hard."

With two assists, McCormick took over the team lead with nine points on three goals and three assists.

Junior forward Callum Squires came off the bench to tie the game in the 76th minute, tapping the ball into an open net after junior midfielder Jorge Villamarin worked the ball free in the left corner and sent a low cross to the right side of the box.

CC compiled a 23-11 advantage in total shots, while TU had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Theo Hooker made four saves for Colorado College, which improved to 4-1-2 overall with its third win in a row. CC is 2-0-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Hooker's best save occurred with 1:15 to go when he stopped Callum from seven yards away with 1:08 to play. He also made a leaping grab of a direct kick by Trinity's Tom Carwile 1:27 into the second half.

Margotta stopped 10 shots for Trinity, which slipped to 5-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

His best saves occurred at the 60-minute mark when he stopped consecutive shots by Grossenbacher. Seven minutes later, he tipped a long volley by senior midfielder Ryan Huettel over the crossbar.

"We're really proud of the effort and our guys should enjoy this one," Palguta said. "We want to make sure this game does not define our season. It just serves as a platform to push us forward to bigger things."

The teams will meet again on Sunday, Oct. 11, in San Antonio, Texas.

CC travels to Texas next week for its first SCAC road games at Southwestern University on Friday, Sept. 25, and Texas Lutheran University on Sunday, Sept. 27.
