Pirates Use Fourth Quarter to Edge Tigers

Box Score Southwestern University used a late run in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 71-55 victory over Colorado College in the Tigers' final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference road game of the weekend on Saturday evening in Georgetown, Texas.
 
CC closed to within 41-42 when junior forward Korbyn Ukasick drained a jump shot with five seconds left in the third quarter, but Southwestern used the remaining 10 minutes to outscore the Tigers 29-14 to hold on to the victory.
 
Ukasick led Colorado College with her fourth double-double of her career on 16 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Katie Wirth and senior forward Danielle Davis also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Pirates took an early 9-5 lead midway through the first quarter when Audrey Garcia made a layup, but the Tigers came back with a 5-0 run en route to a 10-9 lead when Ukasick made a free throw with 2:47 remaining.
 
Olivia Podaras struck back with a jump shot to help Southwestern spark a 7-2 run to close out the quarter with a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes.
 
Kelsey Faykus made a free throw to give the Pirates a 21-14 lead with 7:48 left in the second quarter, however, freshman guard Casey Torbet drained a layup 10 seconds later to help ignite an 8-2 run to pull CC to within a point.
 
Southwestern (7-11, 4-3 SCAC) came back scoring a jump shot and a free throw in the final 50 seconds to take a 26-22 advantage at halftime.
 
Freshman forward Kate Loy gave the Tigers a 31-30 lead when she hit a jump shot with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter, but Tori Carraway made a layup with 5:22 remaining to help the Pirates to an 8-0 run.
 
CC closed out the quarter with a 10-4 run and was able to close the gap to a point after 30 minutes of action, which proved to be as close as the Tigers would get the remainder of the game.
 
Southwestern was led by Garcia with a game-high 17 points. Carraway also scored in double figures with 16 points, while Podaras and Brianna Turney added 11 points apiece.
 
Colorado College (2-17. 1-7 SCAC) returns to Reid Arena for its final four home games of the season. The Tigers begin its home stand with a rematch against Texas Lutheran on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. MT.
