Tigers Best No. 4 Southwestern In Five Sets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The sixth-ranked Colorado College volleyball team finished its regular season of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories over No. 4 Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University on Sunday in Kerrville, Texas.
 
The Tigers had five players match or set season highs in their regular-season finale to beat fourth-ranked Southwestern, 3-2, and improve to 24-4 overall this season and 11-3 in conference play.
 
Senior outside hitter Abbe Holtze earned her 16th double-double of the season with a team-best 21 kills and a season-high 23 digs. Senior setter Rebecca Watson earned season-highs of 42 assists and 12 digs to record her third double-double of the season, while junior outside hitter Reagan Folaron picked up her second double-double of the season with 17 digs and tied her season-high 11 kills.
 
Middle hitters sophomore Myca Steffey-Bean and freshman Marguerite Spaethling also contributed with a season-high 12 kills and tied a season-high 11 kills, respectively.
 
Midway through the first set Spaethling slammed down a kill to tie the set at 14-14. CC then used four errors by Southwestern and a kill by Steffey-Bean to build a 19-14 lead. The Tigers finished the set scoring six out of the 12 points to win the set 25-20.
 
Southwestern built a 15-10 lead in the second set, but Holtze hit a kill to ignite an 8-3 run to tie the set at 18-18, and took the lead at 19-18 with a solo block by Steffey-Bean. The Pirates' Piper Sisemore knotted the set at 19-19 before Steffey-Bean used back-to-back kills to give the Tigers a 21-19 lead that it would not relinquish to win the second set 25-22.
 
Southwestern (26-2, 11-2 SCAC) used 14 kills and four aces in the third set to take a close 25-22 victory.
 
The Tigers built an early 8-1 lead in the fourth set until the Pirates used a block by Kirby Kincannon and Kate Mitchell to begin a 14-7 run and tie the set at 15-15. A 4-0 run gave Southwestern a 19-15 lead and later the set at 25-22.
 
The fifth set saw seven tied scores with the final tie at 11-11 when Spaethling hit a kill to knot the set. CC used an attack error by Southwestern, a kill by Folaron and an ace by Holtze to take a 14-11 advantage. Mitchell hit a kill to cut the Tigers' lead, but a kill by Spaethling finished the match to give CC the 15-12 victory.
 
Colorado College dominated its first match of the day against Texas Lutheran, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to a -.040 hitting percentage with 25 errors in 99 attempts with just 21 kills.
 
Junior middle hitter Glenna Yancey led CC's defense at the net with five blocks, while freshman outside hitter Jordan Mullen added four blocks for a career best.
 
Freshman setter Lizzy Counts earned her 13th double-double of the season against Texas Lutheran with 23 assists and 10 digs. Folaron led the defense with 12 digs, while Holtze and Steffey-Bean led the offense with eight and seven kills, respectively.
 
With the loss Texas Lutheran dropped to 11-14 on the season and 4-9 in SCAC action.
 
Colorado College finishes its 2016 regular season in Reid Arena on Friday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. against Johnson & Wales University.
