Holtze Nets School Record in Loss to Southwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Senior Abbe Holtze broke Colorado College's school record in career kills, but the sixth-ranked Tigers fell to No. 5 Southwestern University, 3-2, in the semifinal match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships in Shreveport, La., on Friday.
 
CC beat Texas Lutheran University with a 3-0 sweep in its first match of the day to advance to its semifinal match against Southwestern. The Tigers will take on Austin College, which got swept by No. 16 Trinity University, at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday for third place.
 
Holtze combined for 34 kills on the day to lead the team offensively and break the program's career-kills record. In the fifth set against Southwestern, CC was down 9-12 when Holtze earned her season-high 27 kills to break the school record.  Her kill ignited a 5-0 run to give the Tigers a 14-13 edge.
 
The Pirates tied the final set at 14-14 with a kill by Kate Mitchell and then took the lead on a service ace by Brandi Campos. Senior right-side hitter Keli Sherwood struck back with a kill to tie the set once again, but another kill by Mitchell and a Tiger attack error handed Southwestern the 17-15 fifth-set victory.
 
Holtze came into the day ranking third with 1,632 career kills and needed 34 kills to own the school record. The outside hitter earned seven kills in her first match of the day and picked up 27 more to take the record. She surpassed Anna Clithero's (2005-08) 1,664 career kills and Emily Perkin's (2007-10) 1,665 career kills to rank first with 1,666 kills.
 
Southwestern (30-3) won the first two sets, 25-22, 25-20, but Colorado College came back in the third set with a close 26-24 victory.
 
The Tigers had their best performance in the fourth set hitting a game-best .400 attack percentage with 14 kills in 30 attempts with just two errors. They also held the Pirates to a game-low -.056 hitting percentage with just five kills in 36 attempts with seven errors to dominate the set with a 25-12 win and tie the match at two sets apiece.   
 
Freshman setter Lizzy Counts earned a career-high 55 assists and added 16 digs for her 15th double-double of the season against Southwestern. Holtze also picked up 17 digs for her 17th double-double of the season, while freshman outside hitter Jordan Mullen earned her first-ever double-double on career highs of 17 digs and 16 kills.
 
Freshmen defensive specialists Anna Gurolnick and Haley Harris anchored the back row with 22 and 17 digs, respectively. Junior middle hitter Glenna Yancey led the team with six blocks, while Sherwood added 10 kills and four blocks.   
 
Colorado College (26-5) dominated its first match of the day with a 25-15, 26-24, 25-22 victory over Texas Lutheran. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to a .081 hitting percentage on 35 kills in 148 attempts, while forcing 23 errors.
 
Mullen led the offense with 10 kills, while Counts earned 28 assists, 18 digs and six kills. Holtze also contributed with 19 digs, while Gurolnick and Harris added 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
 
Texas Lutheran (14-17) will play the University of Dallas for fifth place on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT, while No. 5 Southwestern and No. 16 Trinity will play for the Championship at 4:30 p.m. CT.
