CC Advances to SCAC Championship Game

Box Score Christian Wulff scored early in the game and the Colorado College defense took it from there as the 14th-ranked Tigers advanced to the championship game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon.

CC will face No. 3 Trinity University, which rolled to a 5-1 victory over host Austin College, on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

The Tigers broke through in the sixth minute when sophomore defender Alexander Makic lofted a long cross into the box, which Wulff was able to settle and send a low shot from the left side past TLU goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez.

It proved to be the second career game winner for Wulff, as well as the first career point for Makic.

"We spoke in great length prior to the game about a strong start," head coach Scott Palguta said. "I was pleased to see the guys establish dominance early in the game and score a quick goal. Christian Wulff played an excellent game in addition to his beautiful goal."

One goal was more than enough for the Colorado College defense, which recorded its 12th shutout of the season and lowered its conference leading goals-against average to 0.51.

The Tigers allowed just five total shots, only two of which made it through to Theo Hooker, who posted his 10th clean sheet of the season and the 26th of his career. CC's junior goalkeeper made a save on Brice Collier's effort in the 64th minute and then denied David Ching just 94 seconds later.

That, however, proved to be the only sustained pressure of the game from the Bulldogs.

At the other end of the pitch, Rodriguez made five of his six saves during the second half to prevent Colorado College from building on its lead.

He stopped three shots in a span of 7:19 and got some much-needed help from his back line which prevented a shot from junior midfielder Tim Huettel from crossing the line late in the 57th minute.

The Tigers finished with an 18-5 advantage in total shots and took seven of the game's nine corner kicks.

With its eighth straight victory, including six on the road, CC improved to 16-2-1. It marks only the second time since 1992 that Colorado College has won 16 games in a season. The 2014 squad posted a 16-4-1 record.

"It would have been nice to score a second or third goal, but we really didn't allow TLU many looks at our goal," Palguta said. "This time of year, you take wins any way you can get them. Overall, it was a solid performance from the guys."

CC and Trinity will square off in the SCAC championship game for the third year in a row. Last year, TU utilized a penalty kick to record a 1-0 victory at Stewart Field.
