Cole Shoots Tigers Past Chapman

Box Score Junior midfielder Sadie Cole struck for the deciding goal with 4:47 remaining in the second half as the Colorado College women's lacrosse team survived a roller coaster ride to defeat Chapman University, 19-15, on Wednesday afternoon.

Cole's game winner off a feed from freshman attacker Nikki Blair came 2:37 after junior midfielder Tessa Oliaro capped a 5-1 run by the Panthers that tied the game at 15-15 with 7:24 to play.

Chapman sophomore midfielder Stacey Zuppa scored once and set up three other goals to help the Panthers level the score.

Junior midfielder Natalie Shishido's man-up tally gave CC a two-goal advantage with 1:37 remaining, and markers by junior midfielder Mary Taussig and Cole during the final 62 seconds sealed the victory.

After falling behind 9-6 with 3:42 remaining in the first half, the Tigers caught fire and scored eight of the next nine goals and built a 14-10 lead on sophomore attacker Annie DeFrino's fifth goal with a little less than 21 minutes to play.

DeFrino led Colorado College with five goals and seven points, while sophomore attack Steph Kelly scored three times and had a pair of assists. Cole and Shishido each finished with three goals and set up one more.

Senior Martha Smith stopped seven shots for the Tigers, who improved to 5-1.

Kelly grabbed a season-high 13 draw controls, while Cole snagged a career-high eight ground balls. Senior midfielder Michelle Cully and Taussig caused three turnovers apiece.

Colorado College launched 40 shots, compared to only 26 for the Panthers. The Tigers won 23 of 36 draw controls and finished with a 28-22 edge in ground balls.

Chapman committed 28 fouls and took three yellow cards, the last of which led to Cole's game winner. CC was whistled nine times and booked once.

Junior goaltender Tara Sonnemaker made 14 saves for the Panthers, who slipped to 6-2.

Junior attacker Gretchen Rodenberger and freshman midfielder scored three goals apiece for Chapman.

Colorado College wraps up its three-game road trip on Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
