Box Score Colorado College struck for 10 goals in the first 10 minutes and rolled to a 23-1 victory over the University of Northwestern in its season opener on Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.
It took only 19 seconds for junior midfielder
Sadie Cole to put the Tigers on the board and she set up
Steph Kelly's game winner just 17 seconds later. Cole, who finished the contest with three goals and a pair of assists, factored in five of CC's first six goals.
Sophomore attacker
Annie DeFrino set personal single-game highs with five goals, four assists and nine points for Colorado College. DeFrino scored four times in the first half, the last of which came with seven seconds to go after intercepting a pass just outside the NWU goal.
Steph Kelly was a force all over the field for the Tigers. The sophomore attacker scored four goals and set up three others during 30 minutes of action in the offensive zone. She also recorded a game-high 10 draw controls.
Junior attacker
Lily Benjamin had two goals and three assists, while junior midfielder
Mary Taussig scored twice and added a pair of assists.
Senior goaltender
Martha Smith did not face a shot during the first half. Kelly traded sticks and played the final 30 minutes in goal and stopped a pair of shots for CC.
Meanwhile, Smith seized the opportunity to notch her first collegiate goal on a free-position shot 11:54 into the second half.
First-year Tigers
Ellie Meyer,
Nikki Blair and
Emily Carlson also scored their first career goals.
Colorado College launched 39 shots, compared to only three for the Eagles. The Tigers also posted a 24-10 margin in ground balls and won 18 of 24 draw controls.
Freshman midfielder Jordyn Broberg broke up the shutout midway through the second with a free-position goal that trickled over the line after Kelly got a piece of the original shot.
Freshman goalie Sydney Werlein made nine saves for the Eagles, who dropped to 0-2.
Junior midfielder Jenny Chamberlain recorded three draw controls and a pair of ground balls for Northwestern.
Colorado College continues its season-opening four-game home stand on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Southwestern University.
