CC Dominates in Conference Opener

Box Score The fourth-ranked Colorado College volleyball team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Austin College on Friday evening in Reid Arena.
 
Senior outside hitter Abbe Holtze led the team with 10 kills and 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior middle hitter Glenna Yancey and freshman middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling each drilled down eight kills, while Spaethling led the team with eight blocks
 
With the victory, the Tigers improved to 9-0 on the season and 1-0 in SCAC action.
 
"It was a great all-around performance with well-balanced play by the team," said head coach Rick Swan. "We had great passing and look forward to playing again tomorrow."
 
CC earned 61 digs and 10 blocks on the night, while holding Austin to a -.045 hitting percentage on 18 kills with 23 errors in 112 attempts. Freshman libero Anna Gurolnick and junior outside hitter Reagan Folaron each picked up 12 digs to aid the Tigers' back row.
 
Austin jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first set, but CC answered with a kill by Folaron to help ignite a 17-4 run. Holtze hit a .714 attack percentage in the set with six kills on seven attempts with just one error, while Spaethling went a perfect 4-for-4. The Tigers went on to win the first set 25-12.
 
The 'Roos chipped away at CC's six point lead in the second set to pull within 14-16, however, a service error by Austin and a block by Holtze and Spaethling helped the Tigers regain their momentum on a 9-5 run to win the second set, 25-19.
 
After Austin took an early 4-5 lead on a solo block by senior middle hitter Presleigh Watson in the third set, CC powered back on a kill by freshman setter Lizzy Counts to spark a 10-0 run, which included back-to-back service aces by senior setter Rebecca Watson.
 
The Tigers ended the match on a block by freshman right side hitter Jillian Gibbs and Spaethling, to take a 25-13 win in the final set.
 
Watson and Counts orchestrated the offense for CC with 17 and 14 assists, respectively.
 
Austin (7-5, 0-1 SCAC) was led by junior middle hitter Rebekah Bowden with five kills, while junior libero Madi McVay anchored the back row with 17 digs.
 
Colorado College returns to action on Saturday against Centenary College at 12:30 pm and University of Dallas at 5 p.m. in Reid Arena.
