Rubin’s Goal Lifts CC Past Schreiner

Box Score Junior midfielder Brian Rubin struck for the only goal of the game with a little more than 20 minutes to play to give Colorado Collegea 1-0 victory at Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon.

Battling through the heat and humidity of South Texas, the Tigers broke through when Rubin latched on to Tim Huettel's second ball at the edge of the six-yard box and put a half volley into the lower left corner.

The tally was Rubin's first game winner and the second goal of his career. Huettel has earned at least one point in three of the last four games.

"Brian Rubin played very well and deserved his goal," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Nathan Andersen filled in admirably at center back and started many of our best attacks with his quality passing."

CC's stingy defense was never seriously threatened, allowing just two shots and a pair of corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Theo Hooker needed to make just one save while posting his fourth clean sheet of the season and the 20th of his career. He gloved Dalton Reid's shot a little more than three minutes after Rubin put Colorado College on the scoreboard.

"It was very hot and muggy, and the guys clearly were fatigued from Friday night's game at Trinity," Palguta said. "Our second-half performance was much better than the first, and our substitutes were a big part of the turnaround."

The Tigers launched seven of their 15 shots and produced and four of six corners during the second frame.

CC improved to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Starting goalkeeper Brandon Anselmi and Blake Lawson recorded two saves apiece during 45 minutes of action for the Mountaineers.

Schreiner slipped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play.

Colorado College kicks off a five-game home stand on Friday, Sept. 23, when Texas Lutheran University visits Stewart Field for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
