Abbe Holtze led No. 9 Colorado College with a combined 21 kills, 19 digs and six services aces as the Tigers opened their 2016 season with a pair of sweeps over Hardin-Simmons University and Lewis & Clark College during the first day of the Colorado College Classic.

Holtze began the day with a team-best nine kills, eight digs and four aces in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 victory over Hardin-Simmons. In her second match of the day, the outside hitter led the team with her first double-double of the season on a team-high 12 kills while adding 11 digs.

CC held Hardin-Simmons to a .038 attack percentage forcing the Cowgirls into hitting 25 errors in 80 attempts with just 28 kills. Freshman
Marguerite Spaethling had a strong presence at the net putting a hand on five blocks to lead the team.

The Tigers served up 12 aces and slammed down 49 kills on a .304 hitting percentage in their 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of Lewis & Clark to finish the day with a perfect 2-0 record.

Junior
Reagan Folaron led the team with a career-high four service aces against the Pioneers, while adding 11 kills. On the day, the outside hitter tallied 14 kills, 12 digs and six aces.

CC had a trio a freshman each making an impressive start in their 2016 debut: setter
Lizzy Counts, middle hitter Spaethling and libero
Anna Gurolnick.

Counts picked up 34 assists, 14 digs, five kills and four aces in the pair of victories, while Spaethling combined for 14 kills and a team-best seven blocks at the net. Gurolnick contributed with 25 digs and five aces on the day to anchor the Tiger defense.

In the neutral match of the day, Hardin-Simmons dropped Lewis & Clark, 3-1. Allison Kuster earned a double-double for the Cowgirls with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Colorado College returns to action in a rematch against Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Reid Arena.
