Colorado College went toe-to-toe with the University of New Mexico on Sunday, but came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision at Stewart Field.
The Tigers pulled to within a goal when
Lauren Milliet scored in the 78th minute, however they were unable to get another shot past UNM sophomore goalkeeper Emily Johnson.
Milliet collected a long crossing pass from junior forward
Clara Richter, used her body to guide the ball past Johnson and played the ball into an open net.
CC's junior midfielder extended her points streak to three games and now has eight points in the last five games. She leads the Tigers with single-season highs of six goals and 16 points.
The Lobos made the most of their limited scoring chances against Colorado College's stingy defense, with both goals originating off set pieces.
Sophomore midfielder Jessie Hix put New Mexico on the board early in the 21st minute when her header from the center of the box eluded freshman goalkeeper
Jade Odom at the upper left corner.
The Tigers nearly scored in the opening minutes of the second half, but Johnson came up big on Milliet's shot from the right side of the box.
A little more than three minutes later, New Mexico doubled its lead when senior midfielder Claire Lynch knocked down a CC clearing attempt near the top of the penalty box and then looped a shot over Odom.
Both teams launched 16 shots, while the Tigers had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Odom had two saves for Colorado College, which now is 5-7-4 overall and 2-4-2 in the Mountain West.
Johnson finished with seven shots for the Lobos, who improved to 10-6-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the league play.
CC plays host to conference-leading San Jose State next Friday, then visits Fresno State on Sunday.
