No. 3 Trinity Squeaks Past Colorado College

Box Score The Colorado College men's soccer team played another one-goal classic against Trinity University, but came up short in its quest to take over first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The game came down to one fortunate bounce, and Trinity made the most of it.

Freshman midfielder Quentin Vander Lee scored the only goal of the contest late in the 73rd minute when he found a loose ball on the left of the six-yard box and punched a shot through traffic toward the right post.

Theo Hooker made a pair of massive saves in the second half to keep Colorado College within striking distance. Midway through the 49th minute, the senior goalkeeper came off his line to make a two-fisted stop on a blast by TU freshman midfielder Neil Vermillow who launched a shot from 12 yards away after making a run into the right side of the box.

Hooker's biggest save of the game occurred with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game when he stopped a penalty kick by Trinity junior midfielder Austin Michaelis.

CC nearly leveled the score with less than a minute to play, but senior forward Sam Markin's header off of senior forward Cam Stopforth's direct kick went inches wide of the right post.

Colorado College compiled an 11-8 advantage in total shots, while Trinity had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Lieberman finished with five saves for TU and got three blocked shots from his defense.

Three minutes into the second half, CC generated a dangerous opportunity when Stopforth's shot from the upper left corner of the box was blocked, but the rebound eluded Robert Malone who was free near the right post.

Trinity improved to 12-1-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, and now is four points clear of the University of Dallas atop the conference standings.

CC slipped to 8-3-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference, and now trails Dallas by one point with five SCAC games remaining.

Colorado College hits the road next week for conference games at Austin College and Centenary College on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
