Box Score Despite a season-high 20 points from junior guard
Casey Torbet, Colorado College dropped a 65-50 decision to host Whitworth University on Friday night in the Holiday Classic presented by Red Lion River.
Torbet connected on seven of 17 field-goal attempts and five of six free throws while reaching the 20-point mark for the second time in her career.
Freshman winger
McKenzee Gertz finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while recording her third double-double of the season.
In a game that was much closer than the final score indicates, Gertz pulled the Tigers to within seven points when she scored on a layup with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
After the Tigers closed to within 57-50, Whitworth scored eight points during the final 1:22.
CC led for most of the first half, but the Pirates closed out the second quarter with an 11-4 run to grab a 22-20 lead after 20 minutes.
Colorado College took its largest lead at 31-16 when Gertz dialed long distance a little more than three minutes into the second half, however Whitworth answered with a 9-4 run to level the score at 35-35.
Sophomore point guard
Jordan Meltzer gave the Tigers a 37-35 lead midway through the third quarter, but the hosts responded with nine consecutive points to take a seven-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers trailed by 12 points with 5:24 remaining in the game, but cut their deficit in a half when Torbet scored with 2:34 to play. That, however, was as close as CC would get.
Grace Douglas hit six of 12 three-point attempts and led the Pirates with a game-high 26 points.
Colorado College (2-6) faces No. 9 Whitman College on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
