CC Battles Bears, Conditions to Win Home Opener

Box Score Colorado College overcame brutal conditions and a formidable opponent to win its home opener on Monday afternoon.

After not being able to create any real separation during the first 45 minutes, the Tigers scored four of the last five goals and pulled away for a 14-11 victory against Ursinus College at a cold and windy Stewart Field.

"The conditions definitely had an effect on both teams," head coach Susan Stuart said. "We didn't look as crisp as normal and our speed of play wasn't what we expect, but we displayed some mental toughness and were able to rise above what we couldn't control to defeat a very good opponent."

Sophomore attacker Nikki Blair snapped a 10-10 on a free-positon goal with 11:47 remaining in the game. Sophomore midfielder Ellie Meyer gave CC a two-goal advantage nearly two minutes later, and then senior attacker Lily Benjamin scored off of a save of her initial shot to give the Tigers a 13-10 with 7:51 to play.

Amy Kohout struck for her fourth goal to pull the Bears to within two with a little more than seven minutes on the clock, but that was the last one the Colorado College defense would allow.

Senior midfielder Mary Taussig won the draw control and the Tigers ran off more than three minutes before she struck for the final goal of the contest.

Before taking control for good during the final 12 minutes, CC held a lead four different times. But on each of those occasions, Ursinus rallied to tie the score.

Colorado College used a 4-1 spurt to build a 6-3 lead on freshman midfielder Lauren Pejza's goal with 8:26 to go in the first half, only to see the Bears rally with markers from Abby Goldstein, Kohout and Franny Liberatoscioli to knot the score at 6-6.

Goals by Taussig and junior attacker Steph Kelly gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead almost six minutes into the second half, and after Emily DiGiorgio got one back for Ursinus, Kelly struck again after coming out from behind the net and whizzing a low shot past junior goaltender Meaghan Corbin.

Kohout and Bridget Sherry scored less than a minute apart to make the score 9-9, and after Sadie Cole gave CC another lead, Kohout found the net again to tie the game again with 13:41 to play.

Cole led Colorado College with three goals, while Kelly finished with a pair of scores and three assists. Junior attacker Annie DeFrino, Benjamin and Taussig struck twice for the Tigers.

Freshman goaltender Remy Wells made three saves during the first half for CC. Junior Zoe Frolik stopped four shots during the final 30 minutes to earn the victory in goal.

Colorado College won 17 of 27 draw controls and had a 32-24 advantage in total shots.

DeFrino caused four turnovers, while senior defender Abbe Sawabini finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Kelly recorded a game-high six draw controls.

Junior goaltender Meaghan Corbin made 10 saves for the Bears, who slipped to 2-2.

Colorado College will be back in action on Tuesday when the Tigers play host to Emerson College at 3 p.m.
