Kobe Roth scored twice and Parker Mackay added a goal and an assist as 15th-ranked Minnesota Duluth completed a weekend sweep of Colorado College with a 5-1 victory Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Westin Michaud put the Tigers (9-10-3, 3-7-2-1 NCHC) ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal at the 7:27 mark of the first period. Just seconds after the Bulldogs were called for too many men on the ice,
Mason Bergh sent a pass from behind the net to Michaud, who fired a one-timer from the slot past UMD goalie Hunter Shepard.
Nick Halloran also collected an assist on the play to equal his career high with a six-game point streak.
Â
That is all Shepard allowed on the evening as the Bulldogs (11-9-3, 5-7-0-0 NCHC) scored the final five goals of the game and outshot CC, 45-19, including a 36-9 margin in the final two periods. Shepard finished the contest with 18 saves.
Â
The Bulldogs tied the game at the 14:23 mark of the opening frame when Nick Wolff sent a wrister from the point that eluded freshman goalie
Alec Calvaruso, who made his first collegiate start.
Â
Roth scored the game-winner with 1:32 remaining in the second period by banging home a rebound after Calvaruso saved a shot by Mackay. Calvaruso exited the game following the second period and was replaced by
Alex Leclerc, who made 18 saves in the final period, including one on a breakaway by Joey Anderson less than a minute in.
Â
Mackey made it 3-1 at the 4:53 mark of the third when his shot from the right circle deflected off a CC defender and into the net. Just 40 seconds later, Billy Exell scored from the doorstep, then Roth completed the scoring with his second of the night with 1:52 remaining in the game.
Â
"I was not happy with our last 40 (minutes)," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We did not play to our identity. That is not who we need to be to win a hockey game. We need to play a smart, simple game."
Â
The Tigers travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a weekend series against Western Michigan, Jan. 19-20.
