Valiant Rally Falls Short Against Trinity

Box Score Colorado College overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to pull to within a point of Trinity University with 2:29 to play, but the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-champions used a 9-4 spurt during the final 2:11 to close out a 76-70 victory in the first semifinal game of the 2018 SCAC Championship on Saturday at Reid Arena.

Soon after sophomore forward Evan Underbrink pulled CC to within a pint at 67-66, sophomore forward Abby Holland scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Texas Tigers a five-point lead.

Junior guard Casey Torbet hit a jumper with 25 seconds remaining to trim the Colorado College deficit to 73-70, however TU sank three of four free throws during the final 18 seconds to secure a spot in Sunday's conference championship game against third-seeded Southwestern University. The Pirates knocked off Austin College, the No. 2 seed, 81-79 in overtime.

Trinity led 28-12 after senior forward Kate Irvin scored on a layup early in the second quarter and led by 13 after 20 minutes.

Underbrink and freshman guard Jade Odom scored four points apiece as CC opened the third quarter with a 10-1 run which cut its deficit to 38-34.

After Holland gave TU a 44-36 lead, Colorado College scored seven consecutive points to pull to within one for the first time.

Trinity surged to a 64-53 lead when freshman Julia Ackerman hit a three-pointer with just under six minutes remaining in the game, but Torbet scored eight points during a 13-3 run that saw CC pull to within one for the final time.

Torbet led the Tigers with a game-high 22 points. She connected on nine of 13 shots from the floor, including four of seven from behind the arc.

Sophomore guard Nia Duplain went 7-for-10 from the floor and finished with 17 points.

Freshman guard Jade Odom dished out a season-high nine assists and seven points.

Sophomore forward Julia Moore grabbed a career-best eight rebounds to lead the Tigers, while Duplain added seven.

Colorado College finished with a 43-27 advantage on the glass.

Holland finished with 20 points for Trinity, which improved to 22-3.

Senior Micah Weaver added 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds for TU.

Senior forward Mollie Hughes hit eight of 10 shots from the floor and finished with 18 points.

CC completed the season with a 10-17 record, posting double-digit victories for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign.
