Mullen, Hewlin Pace Tigers in Sweep of Austin

Jordan Mullen and Emma Hewlin combined for 24 kills as the Colorado College volleyball team finished the weekend with a 25-18, 25-21, 15-16 victory over host Austin College.

The Tigers, who improved to 28-3 overall and 16-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, can earn a share of its third consecutive regular-season crown with a victory over Johnson & Wales next Friday at Reid Arena.

Mullen, a senior outside hitter, led CC with 14 kills and also had a hand in four of the team's seven blocked shots.

Hewlin finished with 10 kills on an error-free 20 swings, good for a .500 hitting percentage. It marked the ninth time the junior middle blocker hit .500 or better this season.
Junior outside hitter Allie Freeburg added nine kills while hitting .292.

Hewlin produced kills on all four of her attacks in the first set when the Tigers raced to a 15-6 lead. Austin trimmed its deficit to 17-13, but Colorado College countered with a 6-2 surge to re-gain control.

Thanks to seven kills from Mullen, the Tigers led throughout most of the second set, but never by more than four points. After the 'Roos pulled to within 21-19, CC scored three in a row to get to match point. Austin capitalized on two errors to close to within 24-21 before a Freeburg kill gave the visitors a two-set lead.

The Tigers carried the momentum into the third set and snapped a 4-4 tie with a 10-4 barrage. Hewlin produced kills on all six of her swings to help Colorado College close out its 23rd sweep of the season.

CC held the 'Roos to a .086 hitting percentage, marking the 17th time this season an opponent hit below .100.
