Keller Mochel and the Colorado College men's soccer team posted their first clean sheet of the season as the Tigers recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the University of St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Mochel stopped a pair of shots while recording his second shutout of the season and the 16th of his career.
The senior goalkeeper made his first save on Joshua Lockhart's shot a little more than 12 minutes into the second half, then preserved the clean sheet when he dove to his left to deny Fabrizio Policastro's blast from just outside the top of the box midway through the 86th minute.
Sophomore forward
Kiran Singh struck for the game's only goal a little more than four minutes into the second half. Â
Junior midfielder
Miles Montgomery forced a turnover along the left edge of the box, chased the ball down near the end line and slid a pass to Singh, who scored on a first-touch shot inside the right post.
The Tigers nearly broke through in the 11th minute, but UST keeper Pedro Medrano got his fingertips on a crossing shot from
John Schuler and sent the ball off the crossbar.
Palugta's Perspective
"We were pleased with the (weekend) results for different reasons. On Friday, we were pleased with our attacking performance. Scoring five at home is always a nice feeling and its fun. But to concede four is unacceptable. And that was our focus today. We kept a clean sheet finally. We had conceded eight on our last two games. If you are going to be a championship caliber team, you have to be hard to play against and hard to score on." Â Â Â
