Colorado College continues to prove it can compete with the best teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, however a signature victory over No. 13 Trinity slipped away in the final seconds on Saturday night at Reid Arena.
Â
CC missed a game-tying shot with 14 seconds to play and Emily Daniels sank a pair of free throws seven seconds later to give Trinity a 60-56 victory.
Â
McKenzee Gertz made her case for SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors by pouring in a game-high 24 points, but her misfire off of an inbounds play near mid-court denied the junior guard the prize she and her teammates wanted most of all.
Â
Still, Gertz recorded 20 or more points for the 10th time this season and her season total of 431 is a career best and ranks 14th on the school's single-season list.
Â
Anna Fanelli dished out a season high 12 assists, which improved her season total to 122. That mark ties her for sixth on the program's single-season chart and ranks 31st on CC's career list.
Â
After tailing for most of the game, TU built a six-point lead on Hailey Coleman's jumper midway through the fourth quarter.
Â
Gertz scored the next six points to tie the game at 52-52, and the teams traded two-point possessions until Sam Henry scored on a layup to put Trinity ahead, 58-56, with 27 seconds to play.
Â
Colorado College showed confidence early, taking an eight-point lead on Fanelli's layup 5:50 into the game. The visitors took a four-point lead midway through the second quarter, but CC rallied and led by seven on the third frame.
Â
Abby Holland led TU with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
