The Colorado College men's basketball team jumped out to a fast start Saturday against Oglethorpe University, but Dimetri Chambers scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the second half to lead the Stormy Petrals to a 94-74 victory at Reid Arena.
Â
The Tigers had a hot hand to start the game, making four of their first seven attempts from three-point range.
Scott Ruegg hit a couple from long range to give CC its biggest lead at 23-12 with 11:43 remaining in the first half.
Â
The Stormy Petrals (3-0) scored five straight to cut the lead to 23-17, but consecutive layups by CC's
Taylor Harris pushed the lead back to double digits at 29-19 with 8:10 left in the half.
Â
The Tigers (1-2) then went scoreless for the next 4:10 as Oglethorpe scored 13 straight points to take a 32-29 lead. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the half and the Petrals had a 44-43 advantage after 20 minutes.
Â
Alex Russo and Price each hit a layup early in the second half for a 47-44 Tiger lead, but Oglethorpe responded with a devastating 21-2 run, including five points apiece from Chambers, Lane Foster and Ryan Jenei, over the next seven minutes and took a 65-49 lead after a Chambers layup with 11:30 left in the contest.
Â
Price hit a couple of free throws and
Edgar Romero made a pair of three-pointers for a 8-0 run to cut the Oglethorpe lead to 65-57, but Jack Murrah responded with a couple of 3s of his own to give the Petrals a 73-61 lead with 7:41 remaining in the second half.
Â
A Romero layup made it 75-68 with six minutes left, but Chambers scored Oglethorpe's next 13 points and put the game away with a layup that made it 88-72 with just under two minutes left on the clock.
Â
"We had some good things happen tonight," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "Oglethorpe is a very veteran and disciplined team, they were really good. We were not as effective with our defensive pressure as we were in the first two games. I thought we competed and have a lot of things we can learn from and fix if we stay the course."
Â
Price led the Tigers with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Romero added 14 points. The Tigers outrebounded Oglethorpe, 46-38, and had 20 offensive boards, including six by Price.
Â
"We had some great individual efforts tonight," Conarroe added. "20 offensive rebounds is fantastic. We are in a rebuilding process and cannot judge ourselves on any one outcome. We must keep our heads  down and keep working."Â
Â
Murrah and Foster finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Oglethorpe.
