Bella Beattie struck for three goals, however her scoring was not enough to get Colorado College a victory in its season opener on a blustery Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Melanie Evans scored four goals and was one of three Colorado Mesa University players to record five points as the Mavericks posted a 16-7 victory, their first ever over the Tigers.
CMU led 4-0 before Beattie put Colorado College on the board with a free-position goal almost 11 minutes into the game.
Kiley Davis scored three times during an-eight goal run that gave the Mavericks a 12-1 lead with 2:54 remaining before halftime.
Annie Tucker scored CC's second goal with six seconds remaining in the first half, and the Tigers added five more during the final 30 minutes.
"I was pleased with how we turned things around during the second half," head coach
Susan Stuart said. "Our young and inexperienced team did what we asked them to do at halftime, and their effort showed on the field."
First-year attacker
Bridget Hanley scored once and set up another in her first collegiate game.
Olivia Dossett recorded a team-high three draw controls and scored her first career goal.
In addition to her four saves, sophomore goaltender
Natalie Slade recorded four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
"We had some great individual performances by Bella, Natalie and Sophie, especially in the second half," Stuart said. "We can build on that performance against a strong and experienced Division II opponent. Playing that game will really help us down the road."
Colorado College Standouts
Sophie Murphy led the CC defense with four caused turnovers.
Natalie Schluter had three ground balls.
Colorado Mesa Standouts
Lula Mitchell made three saves during the first 30 minutes.
Lauren Wick scored a pair of goals and dished out three assists.
Ashton Whittle produced two goals and had a game-high six draw controls.
