The Colorado College volleyball team split back-to-back matches on Saturday, defeating Susquehanna University in four sets before falling to No. 1 Johns Hopkins University in three in a battle of the top-ranked teams from the last two seasons..

The No. 4-ranked Tigers finished the road trip with a 3-1 record, with all four matches contested in less than 24 hours, and now are 11-1 overall.

In the first match of the day, Colorado College overcame a stiff challenge from Susquehanna University to record 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 victory.

Senior outside hitter
Isabella Vasquez led the Tigers with a career-high 19 kills and completed a double-double with 13 digs

Georgia Mullins finished with 13 kills on 23 swings with just one error. The senior middle hitter also produced a career-high seven block assists.

Sophomore outside hitter
Isabella Lipacis posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs.

CC recorded a season-high 11 blocked shots, the most for the program since the Tigers had 11 in a four-set win over Covenant College on Sept. 14, 2018.

Colorado College also produced 13 aces, which marked the sixth time they finished in double-digits this season.

After trailing briefly at the beginning of the match, the Tigers utilized a 10-3 surge to open a 12-8 lead and never trailed while taking the first set.

Susquehanna overcame an 18-12 deficit midway through the second set with a 13-2 run that allowed the River Hawks to level the match.

CC turned the tables in the third set, erasing a five-point deficit with 14-7 surge to a one-set lead for the second time.

In the fourth and final set, the Tigers raced to an early 8-3 lead, and after Susquehanna trimmed its deficit to 17-15, Colorado College closed out the match on an 8-3 run.

In the 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 setback against the top-ranked Blue Jays, Vasquez led the Tigers with team highs of 12 kills and 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and the 12th of her career.

Mullins led CC with a .391 hitting percentage, putting away 10 kills on 23 attempts with just one error.

Jenny Jenks dished out 31 assists and added 10 digs.

Late in the first set, the Tigers held a 19-16 lead after a kill by Lipacis, but Johns Hopkins rallied on the strength of a 9-2 run to close out the frame.

CC was within 10-8 early in the second set when the Blue Jays utilized a 12-5 surge to stretch their lead to nine and the Tigers could not cut the gap to less than seven.

The score was level 12 times during the third set, but JHU snapped an 18-18 tie with five consecutive points and went on to close out the match.

Simone Bliss led the Blue Jays with a match-high 14 kills, while Sarah Kahn had 14 digs.

Johns Hopkins improved to 9-0 with the win in its first match of the day. The Blue Jays face York College later this afternoon.

CC opens its 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule next weekend when it hosts the first crossover weekend of the season. The Tigers play host to Schreiner University and No. 22 Southwestern University on Friday, and then squares off with No. 3 Trinity University on Saturday.
