Box Score Kiran Singh scored a pair of goals on direct kicks, including the 'Golden Goal' 6:15 into overtime, to lead the Colorado College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Gustavus Adolphus College in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Â
Singh struck for his third career game winner by driving the ball into the top right corner from 23 yards out in the middle of the field.
Â
Late in the 80th minute, Singh leveled the score at 1-1 when he put a direct kick into the lower right corner from almost the same distance, but a little further to the left. His shot skirted the wall and went through the spot that had been occupied by his brother, Sajji.
Â
With a little more than three minutes left in regulation, Colorado College goalkeeper
Keleher Felton came off his line to stop a shot by Raphael Cattelin, who got on the end of a long pass and attempted to chip the ball over CC's 6-foot-2 goalkeeper from the top of the box.
Â
Felton finished with five saves, while Wes Sanders stopped a pair of shots for the Gusties.
Â
Gustavus Adolphus broke through in the first minute of the second half when Cole Schwartz collected a pass from Cattelin and drove the ball inside the left post from the top of the 18-yard box.
Â
The victory marked the second time in three seasons the Tigers defeated a top-25 opponent on the opening weekend of the season. In 2019, CC defeated No. 8 Luther College in its second game.
Â
Singh's first brace occurred in the 2019 season opener, the 4-1 victory over Albion College at Washburn Field.
Â
Saturday's game was a rematch of a 2019 NCAA Tournament first-round match won by the Gusties, 3-2.
Â
Gustavus Adolphus finished with a 13-12 edge in corner kicks and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Coaches Comments
"Today's victory was a total team effort," Palguta said. "I was proud of how our youthful group responded to going down a goal in the second half. They showed a determined mentality from start to finish. Kiran scored two goals of special quality and I know he has many more goals in him this season. We beat a very good team today and that's exciting. On the other hand, we need to move on quickly and prepare for a difficult game against Lake Forest tomorrow."
Notes
Colorado College improved to 5-2 in season openers during Palguta's seven seasons as head coach.
Gustavus Adolphus dropped to 0-2.
