Romero Scores Season-Best 31 Points, but Tigers Fall to Schreiner

   
Edgar Romero poured in 31 points, the most by a Tiger this season, but the Colorado College men's basketball team ran out of time and dropped an 87-82 result against Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon at Reid Arena.

Romero was 10-of-15 from the floor and went-5-for-8 from behind the arc. He also sank six of seven free throws.

He became the first CC freshman to score 30 or more points in a game since Michael Reich dropped 30 in the 76-69 overtime victory against Hardin-Simmons University on Jan. 8, 2002.

Romero scored 21 points during the second half to help the Tigers cut a 13-point deficit to five during the final 1:58.

Scott Cunningham, who scored seven points in a span of 36 seconds to get Colorado College to within seven points with 1:13 to play, finished with 15 points four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Mountaineers sealed their victory by making 10 of 12 free throws during the final two minutes.

Alex Dehoyos made 11 of 13 free throws and led Schreiner with 20 points, including seven during the final 1:32.

After falling behind 29-26 with 6:04 remining in the first half, the Tigers utilized a 16-6 surge to build a seven-point lead on Romero's three-pointer with 1:05 remaining before halftime.

CC extended its lead to 47-39 lead when Adrian Price scored on a layup almost two minutes int the second half, however the Tigers went scoreless for almost eight minutes and Schreiner took control of the game with a 17-0 run.

Romero scored five points to get Colorado College to within 62-57 with 6:29 to play, however Mateus Blume hit back-to-back triples from the left wing to give the Mountaineers an 11-point cushion.
  
    
Coaches Comments
"I thought our guys competed until the final buzzer today," head coach Jeff Conarroe said. "They are really playing hard and we are growing tremendously.

"We are putting our opponents on the free throw line too much and had too many costly turnovers. I put our guys in some bad positions tonight and I've got to do a better job. We will get back to work tomorrow and keep getting better."
 
Colorado College Standouts
Adrian Price scored nine points and led the Tigers with six rebounds.
Scott Ruegg finished with 15 points and shared game-high honors with a season-best five assists.
 
Schreiner Standouts
Mateus Blume scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Kamden Ross produced 14 points and eight rebounds.
 
Notes
CC slipped to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.
Schreiner improved to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in conference pay.
 
Next for the Tigers
Colorado College plays host to Nebraska Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Jan. 4, in the final non-conference game of the season. The contest tips off at 5 p.m. MT at Reid Arena.
