Colorado College falls to Southwestern, 77-71

       
Scott Cunningham scored a team-leading 21 points, but the Colorado College men's basketball team came out on the wrong end of a 77-71 result against Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon at Reid Arena.

Jack McRoskey added 16 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists for the Tigers.

The Pirates sank 16 of 18 free throws during the second half, including 10 in a row during the final 3:32 to seal the victory.

CC took a 70-69 lead when freshman guard Scott Ruegg knocked down a jumper with 1:37 remaining, but Southwestern's Josh Jones hit four free throws to give the visitors a three-point lead with 20 seconds to go.

McRoskey hit one of two free throws to pull the Tigers to within two points, but Kyle Poerschke scored the final four points to seal the victory for the Pirates.

Poerschke hit a three-pointer 16 seconds into the second half to give Southwestern a 36-35 lead, however CC stormed back with a 16-5 surge to build a 10-point cushion with 11:47 to play.

The Pirates answered with 10 consecutive points to level the score, the last three coming an Poerschke's three-point play with 9:39 remaining.

Poerschke finished with a game-high 22 points.
     
   
Colorado College Standouts
Charlie Rounaghi produced 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Will Nisbet grabbed eight rebounds and added four points.
 
Southwestern University Standouts
Jacob Hester finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Josh Jones scored 16 points and grabbed three rebounds.

 
Notes
Colorado College dropped to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in the SCAC.
Southwestern improved to 8-13 overall and 5-6 in league play.
