As the temperature dropped on Wednesday afternoon at Washburn Field, the Colorado College women's lacrosse team heated up and utilized a dominant second half to post a 15-8 victory over RIT.
After McKenna Joint tied the game at 8-8 just 38 seconds into the second half, Colorado College received goals from seven different players and held RIT scoreless for more than 29 minutes during a deciding 7-0 run.
At the other end of the field,
Natalie Slade made three saves during the third quarter to give CC's attack the opportunity to catch fire.
Caroline Shay put Colorado College ahead to stay with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter and almost four minutes later
Abigail Turner turned a caused turnover into an unassisted goal to give CC 10-8.
Emmeline Kelley added a free-position goal to stretch the lead to 11-8 with 15 minutes to play.
Four fourth-quarter goals sealed the victory for Colorado College.
Tobin Lonergan started the outburst with her team-leading 15th goal, and set up the final two goals by
Bella Scola and
Healy Bledsoe.
Delia Freliech also found the nest for CC.
Peyton Murphy, who scored three times in the first half, and Scola led Colorado College with three goals apiece. Lonergan scored twice and posted team highs of five points and three assists. Â
After falling behind 5-2, CC outscored its guests, 13-4, during the final 42 minutes.
Joint scored two of her three goals during the first half to help RIT build a 5-3 lead, but Scola struck for a pair of goals as Colorado College took its first lead and opened an 8-5 lead with 3:49 remaining in the first half.
Just when it appeared CC had taken control of the game, Baylee West struck twice during the final minute of the first half to pull RIT to within 8-7.
Colorado College finished with a 28-24 edge in total shots, including a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal.
CC won 16 of 27 draw controls, while RIT won the ground-ball battle, 30-23.
