Dylan Brown matched his career high with five goals and
Sam DiMaio set a career best with five caused turnovers to lead Colorado College to a 15-12 victory over Whittier College in the ninth installment of the Locker-Stabler Cup on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers now have won the last two Cup games and eight of nine since the traveling trophy was created prior to the 2011 season.
Brown scored four goals during the third quarter, including a natural hat trick in a span of 31 seconds, to give CC a commanding 14-6 lead with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. The sophomore attackman set a career high with eight points and matched his bests of five goals and three assists.
Brown became the fifth Tiger to score five goals in a Locker-Stabler Cup game, joining Moses Taylor (2012), Austin Davie (2016), Robbie Stern (2017) and Coby Petau (2018) on the exclusive list. Brown's eight points are the second-most in Cup history, trailing only Whittier's Nick Hernandez who had 10 points on a record six goals and four assists in 2017.
Freshman attackman
Charlie Rainer set season highs of three goals, two assists and five points for Colorado College. His first goal occurred five seconds into the game after
Ryan Trapasso won the opening faceoff, scooped up the ground ball and found Rainer alone in front of the right post.
At the other end of the field, DiMaio celebrated his final home game at Washburn Field by recording a career-high five caused turnovers and a game-high seven ground balls.
The Tigers built a 3-1 lead during the first quarter, but the Poets scored twice in the final 2:13 to level the score after 15 minutes.
CC struck for three goals in the second quarter to build a 6-3 lead, and after Wiley Burkett got one back for Whittier,
Declan Maguire struck for a man-up marker seven seconds later on a laser from the top of the slot to give the Tigers a 7-4 halftime lead.
The score would have been much more lopsided had it not been for the play of Drew Low. The Poets' freshman goaltender made seven saves during the second quarter when they were outshot 16-6. Low finished the game with 16 saves.
With most of the Tigers' starters out of the game, Whitter utilized a 5-1 surge during the final 7:32 to close to within three goals. Â
Colorado College finished with a 31-22 edge in ground balls, while the Poets won 16 of 30 faceoffs.
The Tigers finished the game with a 54-33 advantage in total shots.
Pat Mahoney improved to 3-0 in goal by making seven saves.
Ronan Dooney led Whittier with six points and three assists, while he and Burkett each scored three goals.
