Colorado College hoped that its experience of playing five nationally-ranked opponents this season would pay off with a victory at No. 1 Christopher Newport University, but the Captains were determined to make sure they didn't fall to CC for the second consecutive year.
Dylan Rice struck for five goals and dished out four assists to lead undefeated CNU to a 26-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
The Captains sailed out of the gate by scoring five goals before
Charlie Rainer put the Tigers on the board with his 10th goal of the season, a man-up marker with 1:33 remaining in the first quarter.
Colorado College was within 7-2 after
Anders Erickson scored 3:18 into the second frame off of a feed from
Dylan Wells, but that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Christopher Newport tacked on 14 more tallies before Erickson notched his 20th of the season with 5:45 to play in the third quarter.
Another bright spot for CC was the return of
Ben Anastos, who had missed the last four games since playing in the 12-11 loss at No. 13 Cabrini University. The sophomore goalkeeper made seven saves in his first 30 minutes of action in more than a month.
Pat Mahoney stopped six shots in almost 23 minutes and
Cam Devlin steered aside one.
Zac Hanway made three saves for CNU before giving way to Andrew Clark midway through the third quarter.
Christopher Newport won 20 of 33 faceoffs and built a 51-27 edge in ground balls.
The Captains fired 70 shots, while CC finished with 20.
