Tigers Split a Pair of Matches in San Antonio

The Colorado College volleyball team split a pair SCAC games on Friday in San Antonio, defeating Southwestern in three sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-21) before falling to Texas Lutheran in five (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 16-14). The Tigers are now to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

In the opening match, CC outhit the Pirates, .337 to .156 and recorded 48 kills to Southwestern's 28. Jenny Jenks led all setters with 34 assists. Isabella Lipacis was tops with 17 kills and Meghan Gannon had 17 digs.

In the opening set the Tigers held their opponents to only .053, while racking up .314. CC hit a blistering .406 in the second set and then .297 in the third.

Behind the serving of Carolyn Dormady, the Tigers overcame a four-point deficit and then went up by four, 21-17, before winning 25-18. In the second set, CC took a quick lead and were ahead 14-5 before Southwestern called a timeout. The Tigers continued to lead and the Pirates never got closer than 10. The third set was much closer as the two teams traded points until late when the Tigers started to pull ahead and sat at match point, 24-19. The Pirates won the next two points but CC prevailed and took the 25-21 victory.

In the second match each set was incredibly close. The Tigers took the first one hitting .178 to .093 and in the second Texas Lutheran took the lead and never relinquished it. In the third set, the Tigers went up 14-11 and then 15-12 before the Bulldogs tied and pulled ahead. The two teams traded the next couple of points before a kill by TLU gave the Bulldogs the set. The fourth set was much like the third with neither side going up by more than a few points. CC tied it at 25-all on a kill by Kelley Kandziora before kills by Lipacis and Brooke Brilliant clinched the set. The fifth and final set the teams were pretty evenly matched but the Bulldogs prevailed.

Lipacis led the team in kills with 19 and had five service aces. Coco Barton was the top blocker for the Tigers with four. Jenks was stellar in setting, recording her second-best for the season with 51. Gannon was the team leader in digs with 38.

CC is back in action on Saturday, taking on the University of St. Thomas at 10 am MT.
