The Colorado College volleyball team dropped two tough non-conference matches on Saturday to Christopher Newport and No. 22 Mary Washington on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.
Â
The Tigers lost to CNU in five sets (25-23, 20-25, 13-25, 29-27, 15-8) and then dropped a four-set match to UMW (24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18).
Â
In the opener against the Captains, the two teams were pretty evenly matched in almost every category, and despite taking sets two and three, the Tigers were unable to hold on as Christopher Newport won sets four and five by a slim margin.
Â
Coco Barton and
Brooke Brilliant were tops for CC with six blocks apiece while
Jenny Jenks recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs.
Â
In the afternoon matchup with Mary Washington, the Tigers continued their aggressive play from the CNU match, taking the first set from the Eagles and barely losing the second. In the third, nationally ranked UMW started to take control and won the third and fourth matches rather easily.
Â
Jenks was again the only Colorado College player with a double-double as she tallied 20 assists and 15 digs. Brilliant put up three blocks against MWU.
Â
The losses drop CC to 9-9 overall. The Tigers will be back in action on Oct. 13 & 14 for three SCAC matches against Southwestern (Oct. 13 at 12:15 p.m. MT), Texas Lutheran (Oct. 13, 5:00 p.m. MT) and Univ. of St. Thomas (Oct. 14, 10:00 a.m. MT).
