The Colorado College men's soccer team will appear in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament in Houston, Texas, for the 13th consecutive season. CC will be the No. 1 seed and play No. 4 seeded University of St. Thomas in the semifinal game on Friday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. (CT). CC has advanced to the title match four times over the last 13 seasons, the last appearance being in 2019.
Conference Perfection
The Tigers just capped their first unbeaten and untied SCAC season in program history and the first by any league team since 2014. CC went 8-0 in conference play and will be the No. 1 seed for this weekend's tournament.
In the 2022 season, CC went 4-0-4 in league play. Their last regular-season conference loss was way back on Oct. 29, 2021, against No. 3 nationally ranked Trinity University.
This year, the Tigers outscored their conference foes 19-3 and posted six shutouts in eight SCAC games. CC currently has the longest unbeaten streak in the conference of 10 games, with the next closest being three.
Last Time Out
CC's final regular season road trip went swimmingly after winning back-to-back games against Austin College (3-0) on Oct. 27 and the University of Dallas (3-0) on Oct. 29.
Against the 'Roos, the Tigers secured their first outright SCAC title since the 2019 season.
Alexander Ward,
Wyatt Linggi and
Connor Webster all scored as Linggi led the field with seven shots; Ward and Webster added six a piece.
On Sunday against Dallas, it was a 0-0 tie at halftime before the Tiger offense exploded for three goals off of 14 shots in the second half. The first two goals came less than two minutes apart, with the first being from
Connor Webster in the 71st minute following a nice feed from Ward. Then
Jack Hilliard scored his fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute. Finally, in the 87th minute, Webster scored again off a solo goal to bring his season total to a team-high seven goals.
Defense, Defense & Defense
The defensive third has been a strong suit for CC this season. They currently have the second-best goals-allowed average in the SCAC of 0.81. They also have the second-most shutouts on the year with seven.
The Tigers have been led by sophomore goalkeeper
Jasper Broad, who was named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 30. The Miami native secured his sixth shutout of the season in a 2-0 CC victory against the University of Dallas on Oct. 29. Broad had two saves as the Crusaders offense was limited to only three shots the entire game, including none in the first half.
Broad has the fifth-most saves in the SCAC with 39 to end the regular season. This year, the Tigers have the third-best goals-against average in the conference at 0.81. Broad racked up three shutout wins to end the season and allowed only .375 goals per game against conference opponents.
Spreading the Wealth
The Tigers have scored 36 goals this season, with 10 different players contributing to the cause. Seven players have scored two or more goals, both Webster and
Oliver Ramirez leading the way with seven apiece.
Linggi is second on the team with five goals, followed by Ward and Hillard, who have four. Ward leads the team with six assists for a total of 14 points, second to Ramirez, who leads the team with 17.
Five CC players have 10 or more points on the season.
Ironman Hale
Junior defender
Curtis Hale has played and started in all 16 games this season. He leads the team with 1,424 minutes spent on the pitch, followed by
Jasper Broad, who has played two minutes less.
In his 49 career games, Hale has started in 48 of them and has logged a total of 4,245 minutes over the last three seasons.
The Richmond, Virginia native continues to be a vital part of the prominent Tigers defense and has also scored a game-winning goal on Sept. 19 against the University of the Ozarks (AR) in the 2-1 victory.
Scouting the Field
No . 4 seeded University of St. Thomas has won back-to-back SCAC Tournament titles and earned the fourth and final seed after defeating Schreiner, 3-0, on Sunday and finishing with 15 points with a 5-3-0 conference record. The Celts are attempting to become the first program to win three consecutive conference tournaments since Trinity wrapped up its impressive seven-tournament win streak in 2018.
Senior forward Taty Aleman leads the team and the entire SCAC in goals with 17. He is third in the country with 1.31 goals per game and sixth in points per game with 2.85. On top of the elite goal-scoring, he is also a great passer with three assists.
Junior Daniel Castro is second on the Celts with nine goals and is tied for the most assists on the team with five. Goalkeeper Cristo Gayos has a 6-2 record and a save percentage of .833. He has allowed only five goals this season, which is the best mark in the conference.
All-Time Series vs. Opponents
CC has an overall 4-1-1 record over St. Thomas and won their last matchup 1-0 back on Oct. 1 in Houston.
The only loss to the Celts was a double overtime 2-1 defeat in Houston on Oct. 24, 2021.
