The Colorado College men's soccer team captured three of the four major SCAC men's soccer awards, announced on Friday. CC had 12 selections to the All-SCAC teams and three honorable mentions, the most of any program.
For the first time since 2019, multiple Tigers were major award winners.
Curtis Hale claimed his second-straight Defensive Player of the Year after being named a co-award winner last year.
Jack Hilliard nabbed the Newcomer of the Year honors, while
Scott Palguta is the Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure.
Hale has played in and started all 16 games this season. He leads the team with 1,424 minutes spent on the pitch, followed by
Jasper Broad, who has played two minutes less.
In his 49 career games, Hale has started in 48 of them and has logged a total of 4,245 minutes over the last three seasons. The Richmond, Virginia native continues to be a vital part of the Tigers' prominent defense and has also scored a game-winning goal on Sept. 19 against the University of the Ozarks (AR) in the 2-1 victory.
"Curtis is very deserving of his second player of the year recognition," Palguta said. "He is a tremendous competitor and in my opinion one of the top central defenders in the country. As a captain, his leadership and consistency have been remarkable."
Hilliard is fifth on the team with 10 points and tied for third with four goals. The San Antonio native has played and started in all 16 games for the Tigers and has helped command one of the most dangerous midfields in the SCAC. He has played a total of 1,076 minutes on the pitch, the fourth most on the team.
He scored his first career goal at the University of the Ozarks (AR) on Sept. 19 after dishing out a then career-high four shots. Hilliard has assisted on two goals this season and is one of only six Tigers to have multiple goals and assists this season.
"Jack has had a fantastic first-year campaign," Palguta added. "No moment is too big for him and he's proven to be dependable in important games. He is a talented player with a sharp soccer brain. He's a joy to coach and I look forward to watching his game grow."
Coach Palguta won his first Coach of the Year award in 2019, the last time CC won a SCAC Championship outright. This season, the Tigers are once again regular season champions and the No. 1 seed in the SCAC Tournament. This season, CC went undefeated and untied in conference play, the first time in the SCAC and the first of any SCAC team since 2014. The Tigers currently rank No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 DIII poll.
CC had three players named to the All-SCAC First Team, including Hale, junior
Will Bavier and keeper
Jasper Broad. Bavier was a second-team selection last season and logged 1,106 minutes this season.
Broad was selected to the all-freshman team last season but was selected to the first team this year for the first time in his young career. The Florida native had six shutouts on the year, with three of them to end the season. He allowed only .375 goals per game against conference opponents.
Connor Webster,
Alexander Ward,
Oliver Ramirez and
Charlie Wagner were named All-SCAC Second Team selections.
Dylan Stapley,
Wyatt Linggi and Hilliard received All-SCAC Freshman Team honors.
The honorable mentions consisted of
Rex Karjian, Lingii and Hilliard.
"I couldn't be more proud of the team and what we accomplished during the regular season," Palguta said. "Our all-league selections are tremendous individual accomplishments, but also a reflection of the quality of the group."
