Explosive Second Quarter Elevates Tigers Over Celts

Zoë Tomlinson grabbed 20 rebounds for the second time in her career and was only one shy of her career-high of 21 as the Colorado College women's basketball team downed St. Thomas 67-43 on Friday night.

The Tigers won their second-straight game and first conference road game of the year after taking care of the Celts in Houston. Tomlinson led the way with 13 points and 20 boards. Her career-high is 21, which she grabbed on Jan. 8, 2023, against Texas Lutheran.

CC outrebounded UST 51-26. Emma Nawara was second on the team with eight swipes, three points, one assist, and a block.

"Emma and Zoe controlled the rebounding for our team and I'm really happy with the effort both are putting forth to get our team more possessions.," head coach Katherine Auguste said.

Audrey Bayston was the other Tiger to score in double digits. The senior guard racked up 11 points and four rebounds.

Kayla Mackel went 3-6 from three-point range. She is second on the team with 17 this season. Mackel also swiped three rebounds and two assists.

"Kayla and Audrey shot the ball well and were significant threats from the perimeter with a combined six made three-point field goals," Auguste said.

The Tigers went on an 11-0 run to start the game and never lost the lead. In the second quarter, the offense exploded for 32 points to go into the half with a 43-18 lead. The 32 points is the most CC has scored in a quarter this season.

CC shot 76.5 percent from the floor in the second quarter and 51.4 percent for the first half. The defense also shined for all four quarters. The Celts were limited to one made field goal in the first quarter (1-11) and three in the second (3-8) for a combined 31.2 percent in the first half.

St. Thomas shot the ball better in the second half, but CC continued to outscore their opposition 15-13 in the third quarter. CC did score only 24 points in the second half, but the enormous second quarter was enough to seal the victory.

Freshman Isa Nelson finished the game with nine points, five rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Fellow first-year player Rose Koehler got her first career start and finished the day with four points, rebounds, five assists, and three steals from 24 minutes on the floor.

"Rose led us in attacking the rim and creating, resulting in a game-high assist number and fun basketball. Her effort on the defensive end also made a huge impact," Auguste said.

CC improved to 8-4 (2-1 SCAC) on the season and will finish the calendar year of 2023 in Shreveport. LA against Centenary in another SCAC matchup with a start time of 1 p.m. MT.
