Mackel Scores Career High As CC Wins Third Straight

The duo of Kayla Mackel and Zoë Tomlinson combined for 47 points to elevate the Colorado College women's basketball team over Centenary College 72-46 on New Year's Eve.

CC increased their win streak to three straight and ended 2023 on a high note. All wins on the current streak have been an average margin of victory of 28.3 points. It is also CC's first set of road wins of the year and their first time sweeping conference road games since Jan. 29, 2023.

Mackel scored a career-high 24 points and dished out two rebounds and two assists. The sophomore missed only one shot (8-9) and made five three-pointers. Mackel played only 17 minutes on the floor.

Tomlinson scored 23 points and swiped 18 boards. Eleven of her rebounds were offensive, a season-high for the star center. It is the third time this year Tomlinson has recorded 20 or more points. She ended the weekend averaging 18 points and 19 rebounds per game.

CC shot 40 percent from the floor as a team. Mackel and Tomlinson combined for 63 percent shooting.

The first quarter was Centenary's best quarter for shooting the basketball. CC held them to only 33.33 percent on the floor, but the Ladies went into the second quarter down by only three points.

In the second, the Tigers struggled offensively, making only 22 percent of their shots, but the defense held Centenary three made shots. The Ladies retook the lead with 4:31 left in the half, but a patented Mackel three-pointer brought CC back in front 29-26 with 2:29 till the break.

CC went into halftime with a 33-27 advantage and would run with the game from there. After a substantial second quarter against St. Thomas on Friday, the third quarter on Sunday was much the same. The Tigers shot 66.67 percent from the floor and held Centenary to two made field goals.

The advantage for CC grew from six points to 26 heading into the fourth. The substantial effort by the offense in the third was enough to seal the game from there, as the Tigers ultimately won 72-46.

With the win, CC improved to 9-4 (3-1 SCAC) on the season and will return home to host No. 10 Trinity and Schreiner on Jan. 5 and 7.
